Yugoslavia – travel through time

The Day of the Republic was once the most significant holiday in Yugoslavia and it was celebrated on 29th November. It was famous because the citizens would used their free days for to fill up their refrigerators with meat from freshly butchered animals. It was a ritual where people would gather in the gardens of their cousins’ or family friends village houses and, relaxed from a few drops of Schnapps, would make homemade meat products or reserves for the upcoming winter. This custom has stayed common even after the disintegration of this large country and, although it was cancelled, it was celebrated in Serbia and Montenegro till year 2002.

What has persisted?

The Monuments that were built throughout the 60’s and 70’s of the 20th century during the governance of Josip Broz Tito are still there, and till today, are often visited annually by Yugonostalgics.

There are about 25 impressive monuments, reminders of the great battles and sufferings the people have had. Tjentište, Kozara, Kadinjača, Niš and Jasenovac are just some of the landmarks from the Vardar river to the Triglav mountain (a term often used in local songs to describe the country geographic span).

The Monuments that are now mostly forgotten by the local people, are, on the other hand, still very interesting for the modern photographs, architects and are even seen in Hollywood Movies.

The Science fiction route of the former Yugoslavia is the name that could be used for a travel route where you can experience some very rare landmarks that are nowhere to be seen but in the region of Southeast Europe.
